what beauty can as beauty do –
then they would know the ugly, too;

寵為下。
chǒng wèi xià。

As grace degrades

Gunst wirkt erniedrigend,

得之若驚,
dé zhī ruò jīng,

                            when you obtain it,

                                        denn nie
erlangt man ohne Schrecken sie,

13.06.

失之若驚,
shī zhī ruò jīng,

like frightening, to lose or gain it –

schreckt ihr Verlust auch irgendwie;

13.07.

是謂寵辱若驚。
shì wèi chǒng rǔ ruò jīng。

so, that is meant, enlightening:
„Disgrace like favor: frightening“?

das heißt, dass Gunst und Ungunst
                                                       wecken
sei gleichermaßen wie ein Schrecken.

13.08.

何謂貴大患若身?
hé wèi guì dà huàn  ruò shēn?

What does that mean, enlightening:
“like selfhood honor's worrying.”?

Was heißt, dass ... wie die Selbstsucht wäre
auch große Sorge alle Ehre?

13.09.

吾所以有大患者,
wú suǒ yǐ yǒu dà huàn zhě,

I have big worries there, in fact,

Ich habe große Sorgen, da

13.10.

為吾有身,
wèi wú yǒu shēn,

because I selfishly do act;

mein Tun geprägt durch Selbstsucht war;

13.11.

及吾無身，吾有何患?
jí wú wú shēn, wǔ yǒu hé huàn?

and if I reached unselfishness –
which worries would I still possess?

erreichte selbstlos ich zu sein,
noch welche Sorgen wären mein?

13.12.

故貴以身為天下,
gù guì yǐ shēn wéi tiān xià,

Hence, who appreciate, with their
whole self for all the world to care,

Drum: wem trotz Selbstsucht es gefällt,
zu wirken für die ganze Welt,

13.13.

若可寄天下。
ruò kě jì tiān xià。

well, give the world to them – they’re worth.

sei wohl die Welt anheimgestellt.

13.14.

愛以身為天下,
ài yǐ shēn wéi tiān xià,

And they who with all selfness there,
with love for all the world do care,

Und wem von Herzen es gefällt,
höchst wirksam nach der Welt zu schauen,

13.15.

若可託天下。
ruò kě tuō tiān xià。

well, trust them with all Heaven and Earth.

kann wohl die Welt man anvertrauen.

視之不見:
shì zhī bù jiàn:

You look – it can't be seen at all:

名曰夷;
míng yuē yí;

invisible like plain to call;

聽之不聞:
tīng zhī bù wén:

you listen, but it can't be heard:

名曰希;
míng yuē xī;

inaudible – its empty word;

摶之不得:
bō zhī bù dé:

you reach for it - it's not to hold,

intangible, like subtle told.

此三者不可致詰,
cǐ sān zhě  bù kě zhì jié,

They can‘t be fathomed more, these three,

故混而為一:
gù hùn ér wéi yī:

其上不皦,
qí shàng bù jiǎo,

its height not bright,

其下不昧,
qí xià bù mèi,

                                its depth not dark.

                        nicht dunkel unten,

繩繩不可名,
shéng shéng bù kě míng,

most boundlessly, no name to mark,

wie grenzenlos sie ohne Namen

14.12.

復歸於無物。
fù guī yú wú wù。

returning to non-entity.
