63 - The Lightness of Being

[ A collection of rules or suggestions to the ruler begins with the core rule of not intervening in natural processes.
Some 'paradoxes' of 'becoming aware' follow, and a remarkable departure from the retaliatory thought that
was still stamped as 'right' in Confucius (to repay rancor with an attitude of righteousness).

[ Then comes variations on the advice to approach problems when they are still small, since all greatness comes from the small.

[ Without flippantly making promises, the sage (ruler) does great things far from selfish intent, recognizing problems as early as possible, in statu nascendi, and therefore he remains free from problems (ch. 36, 52).

 01-05:
 Doing without ado,

 business without busyness;

 taste in the tasteless,

greatness in small, many in few.

 Answer resentment with Inner Power.

01-02 'Non-interference', 'wordless teaching', and "taking the subdued and insipid as relish, is the epitome of [creating] order!" [* Wáng Bě / Wagner].

03-05 "If there is a small resentment, it is not worth reciprocating. If it is a big resentment, then it is a case where All Under Heaven desires the execution [of the culprit]. [His] going along with what All Under Heaven agrees on is [meant by his] 'receipt/capacity'." [; *].

"Those who {re-}pay injury with kindness [Teh] are also merging their minds with the world." (ch. 49) [Man-jan Cheng / Gibbs, 1971 p. 191; & "The Sage treats everyone as his children." (ch. 49.13)].

Note: 'A small resentment' {rancor} 'it is not worth reciprocating' is only in Wáng Bě's commentary, in his citation of Laozi the little and the great rancor is answered by !

Lun-yu 14.36: Someone asks, "What should one think of the word {Should one repay rancor with virtue?} 'Does resentment neglect virtue?'" The Master said, "Then how shall we repay virtue? Forgive resentment with upright attitude and virtue with virtue!" [per Debon].

 06-11:
Plan difficult things while being easy,

do great things while being small.

 All world's difficult affairs

 certainly arise from easy ones;

 all world's great affairs

 certainly arise from little ones.

06-07 "[He] makes plan against [eventual] difficulties when things are still easy [to resolve]. He acts on [what is eventually] big while it is still minute." [*].

08-09 "Because the difficulties in All Under Heaven inevitably grow out of easily [resolvable troubles]." [*].

10-11 "Because the big affairs in All Under Heaven necessarily grow out of minute ones." [*].

 12-17:
 So, wise men
effect
 no great things after all,

 hence they can
 complete their greatness.

 For easy promises inevitably

find little trust,

 much ease certainly
 makes many
difficulties.

 So, wise men

treat things as problems,

 hence, they keep, after all,
 without
problem, indeed!

"However, those who, conversely, undertake exaggerations and try to implement this with pathos, will run the risk of failing, because they find it difficult to find their way back to reality on the basis of their extravagant idealism." [Möller p.194].

12-13 "The Sage only by not acting upon [things] that have already become big is in the end able ot complete their greatness. [Ditto with the difficulties." ... [*].

14-15 "He who makes promises easily, inevitably finds little trust. ... he who takes many [things] lightly will inevitably have many difficulties." [*].

16-17 "That is why the Sage treats even [light problems] as difficulties. [Ditto with trust.]" [*].

(Kap. 36, 52).

 01-05:
 Tun ohne Getue,

 Geschäfte ohne Geschäftigkeit;

 06-11:
Plane Schwieriges, wenn es noch leicht ist,

tue Großes, wenn es noch klein ist.

 Aller Welt schwierige Angelegenheiten

*].

 12-17:
 So bewirken Weise
 letztlich nichts Großes,

 darum können sie
 ihre Größe vollenden.

 Denn leichtfertigen Versprechen finden
 unweigerlich wenig Vertrauen,

 viel Leichtfertigkeit erntet
 gewiss viele Schwierigkeiten.

 Darum behandeln Weise
 Angelegenheiten
als problematisch,

 deshalb bleiben sie wohl
 letztlich ohne Probleme!

[Dito bzgl. Vertrauen.]." [*].

/
oder: „Großes kleiner, Vieles weniger“; „Vergrößere das Kleine, mehre das Wenige“;

= Wortspiel-Charakter!].

Kalinke compares different translation types, to find the last way best / vergleicht unterschiedliche Übersetzungstypen, und fand die letzte als Treffendste [Kalinke (2), 2000 p. 63]: "Betrachte Großes als Kleines, Vieles als Weniges" / ~ "Consider the big as little, the many as few" [Ch'u Ta Kao]; "Großes war klein, Vieles war wenig" / ~ "The big was little, the many was few" [~ E. Schwarz]; "Nimm Großes als klein, Vieles als wenig" / ~ "Take the big as little, the many as few" [G. Debon, H.-G. Möller]; "Sieh' das Große im Kleinen, das Viele im Wenigen" / ~ "See the big in the little, the many in the few" [R. Wilhelm]; "Regard the small as large and the few as many, / And repay resentment with kindness" /

[R. G. Henricks]; "Ob groß oder klein, viel oder wenig, erwidere Übelwollen mit Tugend" / ~ Wether big or little, many or few, respond ill-will with virtue" [P. J. Lin after Wáng Bě 王弼, continued by Wing-tsit Chan, cf. E. Schwarz, p. 169]. "Mach' Kleines groß, aus Wenigem viel" / ~ "Make little things big, a lot out of a few" [P. Carus, E. Erkes, D. C. Lau, H. Knospe & O. Brändli].

Wáng Bě 王弼 also (like here) combines 63.04.+63.05., "With regard to big and small many and few [resentments], [he] reciprocates for the resentment by means of [his] receipt/capacity. " -
Commentary:
"If there is a small resentment it is not worth reciprocating. If it is a big resentment, then it is a case where All Under Heaven desires the execution [of the culprit]. ]His] going along with what All Under Heaven agrees on is [meant by his] "receipt/capacity."

[Wáng Bě 王弼... / Wagner, 2003b p.335].

** Cf. 80."Vergelte X mit Y" / "to pay X with Y":
"Groll mit LEBEN" & "Unrecht mit Güte" / "Resentment with LIFE & unjustice with goodness [Wilhelm
];

"Übelwollen mit Güte" / "ill-will with goodness" [Schwarz, 1978 p. 90];
"Kindness"...
instead of 'virtue' (as usual)
[Henricks, 1990 p. 148].
A+B, therefore no doubt about !

No trouble with "answer resentment with Inner Power." / Kein Problem mit "erwidere Groll mit Innerer Kraft" [h.a.].

bŕo yuŕn yǐ dé

+ Hán Fēizǐ

What has a form, always begins its greatness from smallness. What endures a long time, always begins its abundance from scarcity. Hence the saying: "The most difficult undertakings in All-under-Heaven necessarily originate while easy, and the greatest undertakings in All-under-Heaven necessarily originate while small." Therefore, who wants to control anything, starts when it is small. Hence the saying: "Contemplate a difficulty when it is easy. Manage a great thing when it is small."

A dike ten thousand feet long begins its crumbling with holes made by ants; a room one hundred feet square begins its burning with sparks of fire leaping through cracks of chimneys. For the same reason, Pai Kuei on inspecting the dikes blocked up all holes; old man on suppressing fire plastered all cracks. Therefore, Pai Kuei met no disaster of any flood and old man met no fire disaster. Both were thus good examples of taking precautions against things when they are easy in order to avoid difficulties and paying attention to things when they are small in order to prevent their greatness.

Pien Ch`iao once had an interview with Duke Huan of Ch`i. After standing for a while, Pien Ch`iao said: "Your Highness has a disease in the capillary tubes. If not treated now, it might go deep." "I have no disease," replied Marquis Huan. After Pien Ch`iao went out, Marquis Huan remarked: "Physicians are fond of treating healthy men so as to display their attainments."

Ten days later, Pien Ch`iao again had an interview and said: "The disease of Your Highness is in the flesh and skin. If not treated now, it will go still deeper." To this advice Marquis Huan made no reply. Pien Ch`iao went out. Marquis Huan was again displeased.

After ten more days, Pien Ch`iao had another interview and said: "The disease of Your Highness is in the stomach and intestines. If not treated now, it will go still deeper." Again Marquis Huan made no reply to the advice. Pien Ch`iao went out. Marquis Huan was again displeased.

After ten more days, Pien Ch`iao, looking at Marquis Huan, turned back and ran away. The Marquis sent men out to ask him. "Diseases that are in the capillary tubes," said Pien Ch`iao, "can be reached by hot water or flat irons. Those in the flesh and skin can be reached by metal or stone needles. Those in the stomach and intestines can be reached by well-boiled drugs. But after they penetrate the bones and marrow, the patients are at the mercy of the Commissioner of Life wherefore nothing can be done. Now that the disease of His Highness is in his bones and marrow, thy servant has no more advice to give."

In the course of five more days, Marquis Huan began to feel pain in his body, and so sent men out to look for Pien Ch`iao, who, however, had already gone to the Ch`in State. Thus ended the life of Marquis Huan.

For this reason, good physicians, when treating diseases, attack them when they are still in the capillary tubes. This means that they manage things when they are small. Hence, the saintly man begins to attend to things when it is early enough.

39 But I tell you not to resist an evil person. If someone slaps you on your right cheek, turn to him the other also; 40 if someone wants to sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well; 41 and if someone forces you to go one mile, go with him two.
